Aaah but to fool misguided people who are looking for tells and body language is part of the fun of knowing how to use it.

I use what are commonly called signs of interest to throw people off in a business discussion, when you use sexual signals in a meeting without them being overt, it is an interesting study of human behaviour, I actually get fabulous discounts on many things when I go shopping.

It works for both males and females! :-)

Mamod, interesting answer about technology and lack of f2f interaction. I think that yes we are loosing some of our communication skills and its important to be able to practice them.

SXTZ- its not just about cultures. I think of myself as an example,I know some about body languge and use that to my advantage when communicating at work and with people in personal interactions. I conciously choose how to place my body and how I use my hands to send or reinforce what I say to my advantage. If I am up against someone who does the same... what do I trust? Should I look for the clues from the body like shifting eyes of liars, or the crossed legs of someone closed to me, of even the mirroring of a person I find attractive ... can you trust that now?

Well, living with many stressed people and all the pressure on human these days especially in our region, I guess people will start producing mixed body languages in one session, so I will go with words.

And really, we have to trust words more than body language because of the technology we are living now, for instance internet, cell phones, customs, makeups are all examples of how poor body language will become or already is :)

For me I work online most of the time and dealings I make are almost through live chat or Email, which omit any presence to the body language in my life so I have to trust my hunch instead, and this leaves me with words only to analyze and make a good decision about the other person.

Tricky one that!

As different cultures have their own ways of communicating by body language, but in general I actually look for "Tells" (subconscious expressions that reveal the personality) and I listen to the pitch of the voice too.

I trust the combination between their body language, the words they are saying and how they are saying them.
