Clarification:
By Tarab (6arab) I am referring to the feeling associated with the music. So its not the Genre but the feeling it creates and more specifically listening to Um Kalthum.

Is Nashwa and English word?

DO you really think trance is the right word? I think of my reaction to Um Kulthum and I enjoy it and bantereb and all but not to a point where I am in a trance. hmmmm it is a tricky one I think.

Nashwa/Trance/Ecstasie. Could be right.

trance (n.) A hypnotic, cataleptic, or ecstatic state.
trance (n.) Detachment from one's physical surroundings, as in contemplation or daydreaming.

In my case Oum Kalthoum makes me narcoleptic... But that is a matter of taste, that said I have a CD with old Turkish music by SEVKI BEY and this most definitely must come under the heading of Tarab. I can give a copy to shalabiah and you guys can take it from her.

"By Tarab (6arab) I am referring to the feeling..." oh, ok, then the closest thing that I've seen being used in movies, books, documentaries to the word would be TRANCE (nashwa) "a state of complete mental absorption or deep musing".. look it up in dictionaries, it's the closest you'll get

That is true, in general, I know this from Danish where there are no equivalants for words such as "Hygge" or "Ombudsmand". But in the music genre there could be a definition of Tarab, that's why I said there is a definition out there, but it should be given by proffessional musicians. And if there isn't then we add tarab to the dictionary of indefinable terms. :-)

"there is a definition out there somewhere"... no not necessarily, a lot of terms don't have an equivalent cross languages and cultures, it wouldn't be the first time

Tarab Music: Much Tarab, is characterized by an emphasis on melody and rhythm, as opposed to harmony.

So  by definition it could be described as "Melodious" & "Orchestral"  there is a definition out there somewhere!

I believe Shalabieh means 6arab (e.g. um kalthom music).. I don't think they have an equivalent, as I don't actually know what it means in arabic :) some of the songs they call 6arab I find it stupid and awful and some is good, so it's basically one of the undefined music genre.. they have at least one of those in every culture.. I mean what's the arabic equivalent of emo :).. there isn't one, it's just a music genre
