I'm willing to conform only out of conviction.  And even then, have no problem changing my mind as things evolve and my conviction wanes.  Common sense is a good metric to measure against for me.

i think we conform to society to a certain degree by default of being immersed in a certain society and being part of it. Most of this conforming happens subconsiously. If in the morning you think twice about the shirt you want to wear based on where your chores will take you, then you are conforming to social norms.

Social traditions and norms will always limit a certain freedom one way or another, that is not to say they need to be abolished, because some give each community its uniqueness. But, i would say that following traditions because they are, is not realistic; even mansaf now is eaten with a fork from individual plates- does this mean mansaf has lost its special flavor and prestige? The Jaha is a patriarchal tribal practice that i find too man-centered for my liking, it is a tradition that i do not particularly care for.

What i am saying is that norms and traditions change and we should not follow them because they define us and our culture. We are our culture and we can change these norms as we develop and change.

Good one rima, i like the way you think!

I think of traditions as two types, ones that do not limit the freedoms of others and the ones that do.

Jaha as a tradition is ok, going to henna night is ok, eating mansaf with your hands is ok.

Not being able to do something because of people talk is NOT OK.

Conformity is such a loaded word and in my books it is a lso like a swear-word.

I never conformed and never will, but then I get away with it (supposedly) because I am an "Artist", as the saying goes you can never expect of an artist to live by the morals of the Petty Bourgeuois...

And what right has society to tell me how to live or behave, as long as I am not harming anyone then society can go to blazes, I owe the general public nothing.
