i would say that a person who does not make mistakes does not learn, and what a waste of a life that would be!

I think my observation comes from "creating things" rather than everyday work so I totally agree with the examples you put forward.

All famous inventors made lots of mistakes before they were able to successfully build their invention.

I thought the saying was: "Nobody Normal ever invented anything!" :-)

You have to make mistakes sometimes, but as M said in some cases making a mistake is not an option especially in the nuclear powerplants cases!

What if I have no room for mistakes? really, i work in a very stringent environment where the smallest mistake can ruin your career; and with the absense of the tiniest minimal amount of supervision, there are no lines of defense when it comes to assessing the quality of my deliverables.

i guess the paranoia that comes along with such job requirements helps minimize mistakes and enhances awareness for other variables that better shape the outcome or simply identify better ways of getting the job done. would that be a valid alternative to "learning by doing -mistakes-"?
