good point both of you. Ethic complement religion but are not exclusive to them. I do not consider myself religous but defiently ethical!

I think that ethics aren't exclusive for religious people, and maybe ethics were there before religion. But religions came with the aim of complementing those ethics.

I agree with Sahlabieh that things are not black and white... though somethings should be...I believe that evolution is part of the way we were created and lived on this Earth... that's why even God sent different implementations lets say of his One Message... but what sometimes annoyes me is to how much can we adapt our beliefs... when can we say if we crossed a red line or not?

I'm one of those who try to maintain their religion views practiced... in one way or another it helps...  but still I dont think that ethics is to be monopolised by only religious people...

not hurting someone... if you are under attack you will defend yourself and thus inflict pain or hurt on someone else.

I believe in having a strong Moral compass. But reality bites and the compas doesnt always point north. We try hard. And soemtimes we succeed. We are always put in situations that question our ethics. A simple example are professional gifts. Do you accept them from potiential service providers when you are looknig around for others or is a bribe? What if the gift was a simple as a promotional pen vs. a free night in a hotel?

Things are never black or white and it was one of my hardest lessons to learn this past year.

I still think there are basic ethics, like not hurting people or stealing and stuff of that sort.

Situational ethics are something I belive in strongly. As hard as we try to live in a black and white world we have a reality that is full of shades of grey... its how dark and how light you want the grey to be!

Sorry, I don't know what happened with my last post, but I'm sure it wasn't a "0".

I think that as the world is in constant revolution, ALL the ethics can't stay the same, some might or should, but ethics are bound to change, and i don't think religions are the maintainers of ethics, ethics come from humans, their own instincts!

What are some examples of ever lasting, timeless truths and codes of ethics?

I do believe that there is a truth that is everlasting and never changing, but I also believe that when it was made it was made to suit our nonlasting and ever-changing world, and why assume in the first place that most of the beliefs and standards of religion aren't flexible to begin with, because if not it wouldn't have  really lasted or suited people and people wouldn't believe in them even after thousands of years. But there also have to be parts of a relgion that you can not tamper with or mess or even try to change and these make the very core of a religion.

Religions are the death of the universal, timelessness, truth, and ethics of your quest. They, and other notions such as nation states, define us within boxes therefore destroying much of what we have as universal, truth, and ethical.

Also, humanity changes all the time, there are new thoughts that allow us to look at the world differently all the time. Would we, therefore, want to be restricted by certain so called "truths" and "ethics"? Perhaps I would say that one should never kill or steal, but I am not sure what I would do in certain situations to ensure my survival and my living for a longer period of time. I probably would steal and maybe even kill.

So, I seem to be saying that I do not think there are universal timeless truths and ethics. I am certainly saying religions are certainly not the safe-keepers of any of those things should they exist.

I believe there are timeless ethics and virtues that are never changing, and I believe most religions in the history of the world have them. These are the ones that make us better people. Never to steel something somebody else owns, never to intentionally cause agony to someone, never cheat your way into life...etc.
