tip I am searching for beauty. i feel that we are giving up our need for beauty. to see it, feel it and know it. our choices, as a society, are taking us far from aesthetics. i am afraid for our sense of the pretty.

Beauty is all around us, we just have to stop for a minute and realise it, sometimes you can't see the forest from the trees.

Somethings can be so ugly that they suddenly turn fascinatingly beautiful in their ugliness.

Oh also, the "pretty" that D is observing and commenting on here, is not subjective beauty. It is oh i think this tie is great and another thinks its hideous, or even if someone is handsome or pretty. The "pretty" that D is talking about is the perfect pretty. The one that we are loosing, and must think and find ways of finding, saving, and re-entering into our lives.

I do not think that "Beauty" really needs to be defined. D's findings of the beautiful maybe different than anyone else's, but her statement is not  dependent of that. Think of what you find beautiful and think of this statement.

The other issue, is that sure there is lots of beauty around us, but the world is loosing it sense of the beautiful. We work too much, we treat each other roughly, we live in cities that are functional but are not beautiful. We do not take the time to create a world that is aesthetically beautiful.

Sometimes, I would take a vaccation to the ocean side and I find that I feel differently, not more relaxed, but feeling more beautiful. We loose that in the way we lead our lives, we follow roles that make us steril, rigid, angry, impatient, and ugly.

I too, D, am searching for beauty. I too feel that we need beauty to live and survive. I too am afraid for our sense of the pretty.

Can you define beauty D? Something beautiful to you may be not so beautiful to me and vice versa.

I think there is a lot of beauty that is around us all the time we just have to see it and sometimes seeing it means looking into things and not at them.

like consumerism, there are certain goals and targets, rules and values in religion that disregard the human need for beauty. i ask you, what do you think religion has to with beauty?

sea food always look good. now thats beauty for the eye and mouth and stomic.

@alma, ebtasem li takon ajmal. thats the title of a good book. anyways amman or no amman u reflect who u are. i know about the effects of outside factors still work to keep ur self and then try to change the world. there are to circles in ones life circle of influence and circle of interest usually the 2nd is very big and out of reach. so focus on changing the first.

@D, what does religion have to do with this?

When i first returned to Amman a few months ago, i apparently had a look that was "Jesus" like; i smiled and i was calm, and many people kept telling me to quite it. The reality is that i was trying to find the little beauty in a space, an experience in fucked up Amman.

People push you to be unhappy, to see ugliness. i understand that you mean we do not take the time to enjoy the things we work to enjoy, but i also want to add that people who are unhappy can rob you of your ability to see beauty.

We sometimes are faced with a choice: leave those people because they are not very good for you or see much of the ugly.

I agree with you, we have lost the sense of what real beauty is about in our day-to-day lives. The clutter, the traffic, the busy lives we lead in adition to consumeraism and ads that keeps trying to brain wash what everyday beauty means. Thank you for this post.
