I HAVE read Sophie's world, and LOVED IT! But I need a more in-depth book! Sophie's World gives you a general idea about every period... you know what I mean? Oh, and I love the story's plot :P *wink wink*

As for history of art, I'm thinking about buying that one.. I've heard so much about it!!

Thanks a bunch :D

Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder... it takes a form of a novel but it is a breif introduction to philosphy and how it changed since ever till now... I recommend it... is good...

as for Art... There is a book by Phaidon I think is called History of Art...  but that might be above 30 JOD...

i suggest, since cost is also an issue and there are so many books out there, that you start with the library at Darat al Funun. http://www.daratalfunun.org/main/index.html. They have a great selection of books, you can go there and read there as they do not lend books and they also sell a few. it is quiet and comfortable and open.

as for book stores check books @ cafe and University Library and dar el shorouq. best of luck.

the philosophy books only one in arabic, and from a guy who's been reading in philosophy since he was 6.. science and religion are on the same page as philosophy.. anyways, you can simple go to any book store and they can help you there with their recommendations, or as I said, you can find what ever you're looking for and more online, specially that your language of preference is english.. and you can always print it if you don't like to read from a computer screen, that's what I do any way.. btw, iphone sucks

First of all thanks for "FIXING" my typo which I made during using an iPhone to type, which isn't the easiest to use. <.<

Anyway, I don't want books about religions' philosophy, I'm talking philosophy in general, aristotle, kant.. etc. Oh, and I don't like philosophy books writen in Arabic, I don't like the terminology, it's too... umm.. silly??? :P Oh, and, my friend told me about "A brief history of time" he said that it's pretty interesting and stuff, but it's more science, isn't it? :S

As for "The history of Art" my friend told me about that one, she said it's really good, but I looked in a couple of bookshops and I couldn't find it!

Anyway, thanks for helping! :D

that's two different (unrelated) things.. for the history of art, I may suggest a simple book we used to take while studying movie directing called exactly that, "the history of art".. sorry can't remember the authore though.

as for pholosphy (philosophy), I used to have a great book translated from russian to arabic, but you won't find it here.. someone brought to me from pre-occupation iraq, suggested books that you might find in local book stores related to that is:

1. "History of religions" by Sulaiman Mathhar

2. "petite histoire des grandes religions" by FELICIEN CHALLAYE, you can find it translated to english and arabic

3. Another book that I recommend as a MUST read is "A Brief History of Time" by the great "Stephen Hawking"

these are the books I remember now (since I have all my books packed in boxes ready to move to other place soon).. I hope it helped, but my suggestion is, try google what you want, paper books are great and irreplaceable.. but if you're looking for inexpensive solutions, you can find all the information you want online, history of art, philosophy, music, science, mythology, etc
