tip i just read about the closure of Books@Cafe and other institutions because Islam says they're evil (please guys, spare me the "it's not islam it's the people who interpret it... it is SOÖO Islam). what's going on in Jordan and why is the official institution plumetting deeper into conservatism, despite the "liberal" Facade that the regime is trying to portray to the world??

A colleague of mine (Ibrahim Oweis) did this short documentary on the subject called "closed for maintenance".

Salma, I dont think people have forgotten at all... just listen to the call in radio shows and actually listen to the people on the streets. People are grumbling and expressing that displeasure I just think the mediums are different.

I think Nadine says a lot of what's happening in Jordan her Blog post today This Country Brand Has Lost Its Way talking about lack of vision for Jordan.

with the hike in prices and general discomfort people find this a topic easier to fight...close those damn places were rich people are hanging out in ramadan. maybe maybe not. there is big divide between the conservative majority and west amman. intellectual, economic, cultural you name it. amman is a funny place. we get all this price hike and no one does anything. and on this people get outraged. all will calm down soon and all will forgetten and business goes usual.

You can get a feel of the conversation about Ramadan and the closure events of last week in these two quests:
